On Friday, October 6, 10, the first Global PBL Business Course was held at the Toba National College of Maritime Technology Learning Common Space. The lecturer for this course was Shino Naito, who has experience working in the US in a trade-related job, and she gave a lecture titled "Global Mind and Manners: Experiences in a US Company."
The lecture began with an introduction to education and life in America, and working in a culturally diverse company. Mr. Naito, a Japanese person, talked about how he felt and what he learned. One of the ideas that Mr. Naito wanted to convey to the students was "Think Globally, Act Locally." This means "think globally and act locally," and is considered to be an important idea when aiming for sustainable development.
Naito also spoke to the students about the importance of knowing what kind of thoughts they have and expressing them when working in a global society, offering the following advice: "If you are thinking about studying abroad or working for an overseas company in the future, make sure you find the thoughts that are at the core of your being and be able to express them. In addition to gaining knowledge and experience, student life also offers a lot to learn from your peers, and this can have a big impact on your life as a working adult. Make sure you spend time and learn in a diverse culture."
After listening to Naito's talk, a student asked, "What should you be careful of when talking to someone with foreign roots? If you know what country they are from, should you make any preparations?" Naito answered, "Of course, there are things you should be careful about. There are also some topics that you should avoid. If you know what country they are from, it is best to look into it."
This course is being offered by our school as part of our "Global Engineering Project" to develop human resources who can work with a global perspective, and we plan to continue offering omnibus-style classes inviting people and experts with extensive experience in overseas business.
