Q & A

About Toba National College of Maritime Technology

Q1 What are the characteristics of colleges of technology?
A1 It is a five-year integrated education with emphasis on experiments and practical training. In addition to the same English and mathematics as in regular high schools, students at a technical college also study specialized subjects such as engineering and maritime transport. The five years at a technical college are equivalent to the period of high school plus junior college, but since there are no entrance exams in between, students can study freely in a relaxed environment without being hindered by studying for exams. In the final year, students will conduct graduation research as a culmination of their studies. Students will choose their own theme and summarize the results of their research through actual surveys and experiments. Furthermore, if they advance to a specialized course and complete two years of study, they can obtain a degree equivalent to that of a four-year university.
Q2 How is it different from a regular high school?
A2 According to the classification by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, high schools are secondary education institutions, while technical colleges are higher education institutions like universities.

Current students are not considered "students" but rather "students," and their autonomy and independence are respected. Students are expected to behave responsibly. Classes are two consecutive 90-minute classes. There is a 10-minute break between classes, and a 50-minute lunch break. The school has a two-semester system, with long summer and spring holidays.

Q3 Why is it advantageous for employment?
A3 This is because it is a school where you can learn about the fields that are essential to the Japanese economy.

Japan is an island nation with few resources, so the Japanese economy is based on producing goods and services and selling them to the world. In the Department of Information and Mechanical Systems Engineering, students learn how to produce and manage these industrial products and information systems. Furthermore, shipping is the key to logistics that connects Japan with the world, and the Department of Maritime Studies is where students learn about this field. This is why our school is in demand with many companies, as it trains engineers who can immediately contribute in these fields.

Q4  Can I go to college after graduating?
A4 Yes, you can transfer to a university.

Currently, many national and private universities accept transfer students from technical colleges through third-year and second-year transfer exams. Toyohashi University of Technology and Nagaoka University of Technology are universities that were established mainly to accept students who have graduated from technical colleges as transfer students. It is also possible to transfer to other universities. There are two ways to transfer: by recommendation or by passing an academic exam. Since the transfer exams are held at different times depending on the university, there are more opportunities to take the exam than if you were to graduate from high school and then take the university exam, and there are fewer subjects, so the burden of the exam is less. There is also the option of going on to our specialized course instead of going to university and obtaining a bachelor's degree.

Q5  What subjects are there?
A5 There are two departments: Information and Mechanical Systems Engineering and Marine Engineering. In the fourth year, students in the Information and Mechanical Systems Engineering department choose a specialization unit and an orientation unit. In the Marine Engineering department, students choose a navigation course or an engine course at the end of the second year.
Q6 What is an advanced course?
A6 This is a department where students study for an additional two years after graduating from the Department of Information Mechanical Systems Engineering and the Department of Marine Engineering.

Upon completion, a bachelor's degree is considered equivalent to graduating from a four-year college.

Q7 Is it possible to study abroad or study abroad?
 A7 Available

In 20, we signed an international exchange agreement with Maritime Academy of Singapore Polytechnic, and we are conducting student exchange and short-term language training (English) during the summer vacation. In addition, since 26, we have been conducting an international internship with Istanbul Technical University in Turkey. There is also a program that offers a homestay of about 3 weeks. In addition, some students take a year off to study abroad in the United States or Australia at their own expense.

Q8 I heard that there are foreign students, but how many international students do you have?
A8 Currently there are 4 people.

Currently, a total of four students from Malaysia, Indonesia, Mongolia, and Laos are studying at our school.

Q9 What are the abbreviations for each department?
A9 The Department of Information Mechanical Systems Engineering is called Course J, the Department of Merchant Marine Engineering is called Course S, the Merchant Marine Navigation Course is called Course N, and the Engine Course is called Course E.

Although they no longer exist, the Department of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering was called Department M and the Department of Control and Information Engineering was called Department I.

Q10 Do you have a uniform?
A10 I have.School uniforms for boys and blazer for girls.

During the lower grades from 1st grade to 3rd grade, it is compulsory to attend school in uniform. In the upper grades of 4th to 5th grade, they wear uniforms during ceremonies, but usually spend their time in plain clothes.

In addition, the Department of Commercial Shipping has separate white uniforms to be worn during graduation ceremonies and boarding training.Boys wear white school uniforms, and girls wear white blazer and skirts.

About the entrance examination

Q1 Could you please tell me about the general recommendation essay?

Q2 Could you tell me about the local exam system?
A2 The National Institute of Technology has a system where students can take the "Academic Selection" exam at any of the 51 national colleges of technology and other locations nationwide, regardless of the college of technology they are applying to. However, some locations are only open to students from specific colleges of technology.

Expenses during your studies

Q1 What are the costs involved during my time at school?
A1 The admission fee is 84,600 yen, and the tuition fee is 234,600 yen per year (19,550 yen per month). Other fees include textbooks, uniforms, work clothes, scholarship association fees, student council fees, miscellaneous expenses, and dormitory fees for those who live in the dormitory.
Q2 Aren't the tuition fees expensive?
A2 If you only look at the first three years, you might get the impression that it is more expensive than public high schools, but compare the total costs over five years (the difference between high school and junior college) or seven years (the difference between high school and university).

In addition, the high school tuition support system began in 22, and a subsidy of 118,800 yen per year is available for the first XNUMX months (XNUMXst to XNUMXrd years) from enrollment (excluding households with an annual income of XNUMX million yen or more). Depending on the parents' income, the full tuition fee may be subsidized. There is a tuition reduction system for students from the XNUMXth year of the regular course to the XNUMXnd year of the specialized course.

About the Department of Information and Mechanical Systems Engineering

Q1 Do you also board a ship in the Department of Information and Mechanical Systems Engineering?
