1. Groundbreaking Ceremony

1. Tour of the mock-up of the wheelhouse and engine control room

On February 2024, 2, students from our school toured the wheelhouse and engine control room mockups and the (new) Yuge Maru, which is currently under construction, as well as the research facilities for autonomous navigation and remote control ship operation, at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Maritime Systems Co., Ltd. (Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture) and Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture).

First, we will visit the mock-up of the Toba Maru replacement ship.

Corrections have already been made during mock-up inspection, and the bridge and control room will look almost exactly like the actual ship.

The participating students and accompanying teachers were surprised at how much larger the craft was than they had imagined and at the amount of equipment it contained.

2. Visit to the Yuge Maru

Unfortunately, I don't have any photos because it was inside the factory.

Everyone was surprised at its size compared to the (current) Toba Maru. Comments included, "The bridge of the Yuge Maru has many windows, making it bright and open," and "The engine control room is spacious and open."

The Toba Maru replacement ship and the (new) Yuge Maru will be built as part of the same series at the same shipyard, but their different concepts give each ship its own unique character.

Everyone was also impressed with how the living areas were bright and spacious.

3. See cutting-edge technology

We had the opportunity to visit Mitsui E&S Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., which is conducting research and development into autonomous operation and remote control of ships.

Sadly, there are no photos here either.

After the entire group received an explanation about autonomous navigation and remote control, they had the opportunity to see the actual equipment currently being researched and developed.

The students were thrilled to have the opportunity to sit in the seats and take turns steering the boat.
